Last year's staging of this event was subjected to the full range of the weather conditions expected from the locate which boasts some of the highest recorded wind speeds in the British Isles. Nevertheless, the quality of golf from the Championship field was a complete vindication of their stature - personified by the immaculate final round of 70 by Gay Brewer in atrocious conditions which put him into second place only one shot behind the winner, Bob Charles.
