A series of six programmes tracing the major historical influences which formed the English character and affected the landscape of England from Roman times to the Norman Invasion.

The Roman domination lasted for about 400 years but the country was largely regarded as a remote outpost, necessary to the defence of Rome, but expendable when danger threatened at home. Yet Rome's influence has lasted to this day.
