First day direct from Bramall Lane, Sheffield
This is the third time these traditional rivals have met this year. After the weather ruined the first county match, Yorkshire scored a very easy win in the Gillette Cup, and with Hampshire, Sharpe, and Boycott all having played with distinction against the West Indies they must be the favourites.
But Lancashire are having a good season-especially in the Sunday League-and will certainly not let Yorkshire have it all their own way.

In the cosmic age, conflicts between peoples must be settled by diplomacy if they are not to be settled by war. Which is why this week the job of Enterprise is to carry an ambassador from earth to establish diplomatic relations with a distant planet. However, it emerges that the planet is already at war with its neighbour, and has been for 500 years. It's a strangely remote war waged at long distance by computer - a sophisticated kind of postal chess - but none the less deadly for that...

Featuring one of the screen's great stars and finest actors James Cagney
with Dennis Weaver, Les Tremayne

Cagney soberly portrays Admiral William 'Bull' Halsey, the American commander in the South Pacific who in the dark days of October 1942 was handed the unenviable assignment of trying to stop the seemingly unstoppable island-hopping advance of the Japanese. This he achieved by adopting an aggressive strategy, by boosting the flagging morale of his men, and by skilfully exploiting a lucky intelligence coup.
Cagney and his co-producer Robert Montgomery, working years after the events, were determined that this should be a respectable historical account. So no facts are distorted, and Cagney's study of the admiral is externally photographically accurate and internally carefully thought out. In the nature of the story there's plenty of action; but this is none of your John-Wayne-capturing-Okinawa-to-the-strains-of-patriotic-music kind of production.
