Cagney soberly portrays Admiral William 'Bull' Halsey, the American commander in the South Pacific who in the dark days of October 1942 was handed the unenviable assignment of trying to stop the seemingly unstoppable island-hopping advance of the Japanese. This he achieved by adopting an aggressive strategy, by boosting the flagging morale of his men, and by skilfully exploiting a lucky intelligence coup.
Cagney and his co-producer Robert Montgomery, working years after the events, were determined that this should be a respectable historical account. So no facts are distorted, and Cagney's study of the admiral is externally photographically accurate and internally carefully thought out. In the nature of the story there's plenty of action; but this is none of your John-Wayne-capturing-Okinawa-to-the-strains-of-patriotic-music kind of production.
