Athletics from White City: 'News of the World' International Meeting
featuring the women's match between Great Britain and Germany
Great Britain's Olympic team will be picked and announced twenty-two hours after this meeting finishes. It will provide 'positively the last chance' for any athlete to impress his or her claims upon the selectors. The Canadian Olympic team will be present in force for the men's events. The women's events will take the form of an international match against Germany.
Much interest will centre on Mary Rand who will be bidding for selection in the pentathlon (five-event trial) in which she hopes to win a second Olympic Gold Medal in Mexico. All events are being staged over metric distances.
Rugby League Sevens from Wigan
The Rugby League season starts on August 17, and eight of the top teams in the League are taking part in a pre-season 'sevens' tournament which will be staged at the Central Park, Wigan. Rugby League Cup holders, Leeds, will be meeting their host club, Wigan, in the first round. Salford, who won the Leeds 'sevens' competition in May are taking part, and with the fine playing of former Union International Welshman, David Watkins, will be hot contenders. These 'sevens' have become one of the most attractive sports spectacles in the Rugby League calendar and today's match at Wigan will give the official season a warm send-off.
