Many authors carry their heroes through from adventure to adventure but few allow them to grow any older in the process. Alexandre Dumas was different. The Man in the Iron Mask concludes the many adventures of D'Artagnan and the three musketeers who are all by now middle-aged and influential. The story was built round rumours that circulated in Europe in the early part of the eighteenth century concerning the discovery of the body of 'the mysterious prisoner in an iron mask' who had been imprisoned in the Bastille late in the seventeenth century. From that point, Dumas's rich imagination took flight...
