Our Parish
A special series for Rural Schools by EDITH E. MACQUEEN , Ph.D.
' The Old Road '
Listeners to this broadcast will find themselves encouraged to study the roads and footpaths of their districts, and to explore them for local Roman and pre-Roman antiquities.
The scene of the broadcast will be the old road across the moor, now only a farm track, but a main road in pre-Industrial Revolution days.
Something of the road's history will be described, and some of the more sensational finds along its borders will be mentioned.
An historical flashback will reconstruct an imaginary scene on Hadrian's Wall during the Roman occupation. Such ' Our Parish ' characters as Andy Gunnison , the Vicar, and George West will have something to say.

'The "strategic" location of industry'
F.G. Thomas

This evening's broadcast will show by various examples how in recent years industry has been deliberately located in areas likely to benefit from it. In taking into account the needs of both the area and the industry, the maximum economic and social benefit is sought. The localisation of industry in the special areas provides working proof of the scheme, and references will be made in the broadcast to the three trading estates of Hillington, near Glasgow, Team Valley, Tyneside, and Treforest, South Wales.

Music composed during a visit to
England played by David Martin (violin)
Myers Foggin (pianoforte)
This is the first broadcast in this series. Irene Kohler is to give the second and third tomorrow (National, at 6.35) and Thursday (National, at 6.40).
Myers Foggin is a Newcastle man.
His father, who still teaches there, taught him until he went to the Royal Academy of Music. He was appointed professor at the Academy two years after finishing his training and has been teaching there ever since. He first broadcast in 1928 and has been on the air over fifty times, having played at two Proms. He has been conductor of the Choral and Orchestral Society at the People's Palace since the new building was opened-he conducted in the presence of the King and Queen at the opening performance in 1937. Recently he appeared as guest conductor at one of the operas given at the People's Palace by the Carl Rosa Opera Company, and he has been invited to conduct an opera for them when they visit his home town in the spring. It will be the first time he has conducted at Newcastle. Myers Foggin and David Martin were students together at the Royal Academy of Music. They have broadcast together many times.
