'The Hebrides' Overture
Mendelssohn's Overture ' The Hebrides', otherwise known as ' Fingal's Cave ', was inspired by a visit paid by the composer to Scotland in 1829. This very beautiful work has well been described as a seascape and it certainly suggests the surge of the sea in all its power and ruggedness.
'Forest Murmurs'
This is one of Wagner's most magical pieces of descriptive writing.
Siegfried is lying under a tree listening dreamily to the music of the forest: the rustling of leaves, the ripple of the stream, and the songs of the birds.
Siegfried cuts himself a reed-pipe and tries to imitate the bird songs. He thinks about his mother, who died in giving him birth, and he becomes sad. We hear the expressive motive ' The Sorrow of the Volsungs '. Siegfried's thoughts now turn to love and the beautiful new theme of the hero's ' Longing for Love' is introduced.

Harriet Cohen has just returned from a successful tour of Palestine where she played in Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem. When in the Near East she made a great impression on members of the Palestine Symphony Orchestra, who presented her with three pottery statuettes and a coffee set, all the work of modern artists in Palestine.
Harriet Cohen has been broadcasting for some twelve years now, and has fulfilled engagements over the air with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at Queen's Hall, with the Pro Arte Quartet, the Brosa Quartet, and with combinations at various contemporary music concerts. She has given recitals with Szigeti and Tertis, and has performed at innumerable studio concerts.
John Fullard started his career as a tenor soloist in Brecon Cathedral. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, and gave his first broadcast in May last year from the Three Valleys Festival, Mountain Ash. Fullard has given recitals all over the country, and gave a remarkable performance in the part of the Rebel Leader in Hindemith's Mathis the Painter, which was heard for the first time in England on March 15 this year.
