Haydn's ' Drum Roll' Symphony
Haydn's Symphony No. 103, in E flat' (The Drum Roll) is the eighth of the series of symphonies that he wrote for Salomon in London. It shows the classical symphony brought to its highest state of organisation. Apart from added richness of detail and subject matter, the orchestration is characterised by more freedom of the wmd instruments and the lower strings. which obviously results in greater effects of contrast and variety of colour.
A Symphony only in Same
Lalo's Spanish Symphony is a symphony only in name. Scored for solo violin and orchestra, actually it is a concerto in five movements. The first movement is bold and vigorous, with a brilliant solo part : the second is slighter and almost in jesting mood. It is mainly a solo, with accompaniment by plucked strings. In the third movement the rhythm of the tango is used and the fourth is the only really slow movement, rather solemn in mood. The fifth movement is a lively Rondo, showing off all the technical possibilities of the soloist.
An Early Strauss Work
' Death and Transfiguration ' is one of the earliest of Strauss's symphonic poems. It was completed in 1889, when the composer was only twenty-five. Originally, the score was prefaced by a poem by Alexander Ritter , which was, however, written after Strauss's music, and therefore may be considered as a kind of commentary on the music.
' Death and Transfiguration' is divided into four sections: (1) the sick man lies in his bed and dreams of ' childhood's golden day ' ; (2) then comes a fierce, delirious fight with Death. Once again there follows stillness ; (3) the dying man reviews all his past life. At length there comes a briefer, fiercer struggle, in which Death strikes its final blow ; (4) the stillness of death is succeeded by the Transfiguration.

'That Smoky Chimney'

Through listening to C. H. Middleton, the gardener, giving advice on gardening on the air. W. P. Matthew, the master carpenter and joiner, decided to follow suit, to the benefit of thousands of listeners. He made his radio debut in January last year with the first talk in a series of six, and never looked back. His second series was broadcast last winter.
This present series of six talks began last month with very valuable and topical advice on A.R.P. The subject that Matthew tackles today again concerns almost everyone, for what is more maddening than a smoky chimney?

The Violin Sonata in D minor is one of Brahms's most powerful and dramatic works. It is designed, as Sir Donald Tovey points out, ' on a symphonic scale and is obviously as full of effortless power as any conceivable quartet or sextet'. It is a sonata for two instruments in the real sense of the word, in that the music is conceived in terms of both the violin and piano, instead of in terms of a solo violin with piano accompaniment.
Here we see Brahms's musical imagination in its most inspired Mights, and each of the four movements is a supreme revelation of his manifold genius.
