A Radio Play by JAMES HILTON AND BARBARA BURNHAM
Based on the Novel by James Hilton
This imaginative play, so different from the same author's quiet and sentimental Mr. Chips, made as big a hit as ' Chips ' when it was first broadcast in June last year. There is in it all the grip and fascination that Guy Boothby Sonjured up in his Pharos the Egyptian ; there is, consciously or no, in James Hilton 's Conway some of the characteristics and appeal of Lawrence of Arabia.
Can a greater thrill be imaginable than the abduction of an aeroplane with her convoy of passengers, and their landing in the Valley of Lost Horizon in the wilds of Tibet ? Here is romance and adventure of the highest order to keep the listener keyed up. A monastery on the roof of the world. A High Lama with a secret. A hidden civilisation where least expected and there for purposes not remotely guessed. And an hour's entertainment for all who choose to hear it, in the form of one of the most cleverly constructed of all radio plays.
The part of the High Lama is to be taken by Esmé Percy, who will be remembered for his strong characterisation of the part of Ambrose Applejohn. A new play by Barbara Couper , who plays the lady missionary, will be broadcast in a week or two. Barbara Burnham , who adapted Lost Horizon with James Hilton from Hilton's novel, also collaborated with him in the adaptation of Mr. Chips.
' Lost Horizon ' will be repeated in the Regional programme tomorrow night

GEORGE PARKER (baritone)
César Cui's father was a French officer who fought in Russia, and was left behind during Napoleon's retreat from - Moscow in 1812. He settled in that country and married a Lithuanian lady. His son was born in 1835, and. like many other Russian musicians of his day, followed two occupations, for he entered the School of Military Engineering and became a leading authority on fortification.
