Faure had a great power of lyrical expression. His music abounds with beautiful and finely drawn melodies. A consummate craftsman and a harmonist of considerable range and subtlety, everything he wrote is highly polished and designed with an unerring sense of balance and clarity of style.
His Violin Sonata in A, Op. 13, was composed in 1876 and two years later was performed with the composer at the piano at the Exhibition at the Trocadero. It is first and foremost a fine piece of writing in the classical sonata mould. Its symmetry is perfectly balanced and the music is full of the composer's graceful and poetic characteristics.

Major C. S. Jarvis , C.M.G.
Major Jarvis, one-time Governor of Sinai, is an expert in locust-fighting, and at one time found himself commanding four army battalions to fight them. Those who have never seen a swarm of locusts can have no idea of the ruthless size and destructive force of it. Every possible scientific aid has to be employed to fight it, and in Major Jarvis's experience the locusts always won until they were overwhelmed in the very last round.
A week or two ago this speaker broadcast a talk, ' Footprints in the Sands of Crime ', in which he spoke of some of the ingenious methods employed in Egypt in the tracking down of dope smugglers.

Peter Vokes , who is ' Peter' to Tommy Trinder 's ' Tommy ' in this new and popular series, playing an Army sketch with him in each programme, began his radio career as a boy actor. He broadcast in Emil and the Detectives and Gulliver's Travels, and as the boy Columbus. When he was seventeen he toured with Harry Tate in Motoring, and learned how to time laughs.
He has the stage in his blood, being a direct descendant of Sarah Siddons. His grandfather was a famous Harlequin in Drury Lane pantomimes. In the theatre Peter acted in Noel Coward 's Operette, and in Cochran's Coronation revue, Home and Beauty.
Like Tommy Trinder he was born at Streatham. He came into his own as a radio actor when he took Richard Murdoch 's place in Band Waggon while the latter was ill.
