Beethoven's Sonata in A flat, Op. 110, was composed during the years 1820-21. According to Vincent d'Indy, this work and the String Quartet in A minor, Op. 132, which was written four years later, both express the tragic mental condition of the composer during the last period of his life.
D'Indy points out that the A flat
Sonata is the only wwrk of its kind of Beethoven's last period which bears no dedication: ' Only to himself ', says d'Indy, ' could Beethoven dedicate this musical expression of a convulsion in his own life.'

NORMAN ALLIN
This evening Norman Allin makes his twenty-fifth appearance at the Proms, his first being in August, 1914. In that same year he was engaged to sing the principal bass rôles at the Norwich Triennial Musical Festival, and two years later Sir Thomas Beecham engaged him to play principal bass parts in his Grand Opera Company. Since then his rise to fame has been rapid, and, with numerous theatre and operatic appearances behind him, he has established himself as one of the leading bass singers in the country.
Mary Jarred is Yorkshire-born. At the age of twenty-two she won the Open Solo for all voices in Leeds Town Hall. She first sang for the BBC in 1924, since when she has been heard repeatedly on the air. Oratorio is her particular genre, and her repertoire of songs includes works in English, German, French, Italian, and Latin.

Last summer producer Archie Hard ing travelled with other European broadcasting folk to Finnish Lapland, where, at the invitation of the Finnish authorities, he recorded his Feature Programme ' Arctic Excursion '. In return the BBC invited French, Polish, Dutch, and Swiss broadcasters to visit England, and record what they thought might be of interest for home consumption.
