Haydn's Quartets, Op. 76
The six String Quartets, Op. 76, dedicated to Count Erdody and published in 1799, show Haydn at the height of his powers as a quartet writer. They include a magnificent Quartet in G (No. 1), the ' Fifths' Quartet in D minor, the 'Kaiser'
Quartet, with its variations on the Austrian national anthem, the so-called Sunrise' Quartet in B flat, an unusual work in E flat (No. 6), and the quartet to be played this evening. It is usually known as the Quartet ' with the celebrated *Largo ', on account of its beautiful slow movement.
Kodaly's Second String Quartet
This Quartet was composed in 1918, eight years after Kodaly's First Quartet appeared. In mood and character it is in direct contrast to the latter ; as Imre Waldbauer , the Hungarian critic, points out, ' In place of broad, clear forms there is in the later work an exiguous structure which cramps the expression, and a prevailing mood of melancholy and mysticism. Even the gaiety of the last movement has received an infusion of visionary brightness and superhuman force. Characteristic of the scoring of the quartet is the grouping of the parts two by two.'

An appeal on behalf of THE HOUSING ASSOCIATION FOR
OFFICERS' FAMILIES by ALBAN DOBSON ,

The Housing Association for Officers' Families was founded in 1916 to help disabled officers and the widows and dependants of deceased officers impoverished through war service to provide proper housing accommodation for themselves and their families.
The association owns a number of houses and flats in London, and at various provincial centres, which are let to beneficiaries at low rentals ; in addition it helps many families who cannot be so accommodated by giving them grants in aid of rent.
Further funds are urgently needed to continue the work of the association, and to extend it to some of the many more families who are in such desperate need of help with housing.

William Murdoch (pianoforte)
Albert Sammons and William Murdoch , two of the greatest soloists in the country, present that not too common phenomenon of two great individual artists being able to play together, the one being the complement of the other.
Sammons boasts qualities which make him the equal of almost any living violinist, and his interpretative versatility and understanding of various composers make him England's greatest violin player.
William Murdoch , who is Australian born, won a scholarship at the University of Melbourne, and another at the London Royal College of Music, where he gained every medal and prize open to him. He has played all over the world.
Alan Hyde was for many yean principal horn of the Halle Orchestra, and was at the same time a professor at the Royal Manchester College of Music. He joined the London Symphony Orchestra in 1933, spent two seasons at Covent Garden, and afterwards rejoined the London Symphony Orchestra. He first broadcast in 1933 with the Griller Quartet, and is a member of the Virtuoso Wind Quartet.
