(original version)
Conducted by Victor de Sabata
Continued in the Regional programme at 6.0
The very rarely heard original version of The Flying Dutchman differs in several respects from the familiar form of the opera. Neither the overture nor the end of the opera has its present tenderly poetic conclusion ; the scoring is even heavier and more brassy than in the final version ; most important of all, the work plays without a break from start to finish.
The story is based on Wagner's favourite theme : the redemption of a sinner through a woman's love. The hero, a Dutch skipper, is condemned for blasphemy to roam the seas till the Day of Judgment-unltss he can find a woman who will love him faithfully (for which purpose he is allowed ashore once every seven years). One day his ship anchors alongside a Norwegian vessrl, both sheltering from a storm. He and the Norwegian captain. Daland, become friends and he accompanies Daland to his home. There the Dutchman and Daland's daughter. Senta, fall in love. Her lover, Erik, tries in vain to win her back, but the Dutchman, believing he has lost her, puts to sea. In despair Senta throws herself from a cliff ; the Dutchman's ship sinks ; and the transfigured forms of the lovers are seen rising from the sea.
