Folk song and the life of the countryside-these are the dominant influences in the music of George Butterworth , who had composed but a slender store of works when, at the age of thirty-one, he was killed in the war. 'The Banks of Green Willow', first performed in 1913, is scored for a small orchestra of wood-wind, horns, trombone, harp, and strings. It is built upon two folk tunes. The first, that which gives the work its title, is heard on the clarinet — a gentle, ambling melody that is worked up by the strings. ' Green Bushes ', the other tune (in the minor key), is given out by the oboe.

The leader of the famous Celeste Octet, which broadcasts today at 2.0, is here seen at Madame Tussaud's, with Bernard Tussaud and the figure of Dr. Crippen, temporarily removed from the Chamber of Horrors for reconditioning. Squire knew Crippen well. They worked in the same block of offices and often took tea at the same restaurant. He pointed out to Bernard Tussaud that Crippen's tie in the model was wrong as the notorious doctor invariably wore a semi-cravat.

Once again A. L. Lloyd , whose 'Voice of the Seaman' programme was generally voted one of the most successful features of recent times, goes down to the sea-this time with the Antarctic whaling ships with which he is so familiar. For a considerable period Lloyd was with the whalers in the Far South taking an active part in this remarkable industry. As may be expected, he kept his eyes and ears wide open, and tonight he will recapture something of the spirit of Antarctic whaling, something of the lives of the men themselves, and something of the prodigious and gruesome difficulties that have to be overcome in the tracking down of ' Moby-Dick '. You will hear not only how the whale is caught and how it is treated in the factory-ships, but how its many products and by-products are used in the modern world.
