The Doll Medley
Echoes of Johann Strauss
(All arrangements by Michaeloff)
Michaeloff, who was born in Mohilev Pod, principal city of Bessarabia, has been in England for some years now. Destined for an engineering career, he soon showed that his bent was in other directions, and was soon a member of his school orchestra. In Odessa he studied the violin and cello, later spending three years in Berlin studying composition. Here he became musical adviser and arranger to a large Berlin publishing house, which published a number of his compositions, including 'Schlaf, Muti, Schlaf' which won the prize of honour at the Admiral's Palace in Berlin in 1932. Michaeloff has worked a great deal with Richard Tauber , both for records and for broadcasting, and has done film work as well. His Bessarabian Orchestra is one of the outstanding combinations of its kind in the country, and has done a great deal towards making that colourful part of the world known to people over here. The Orchestra consists of fourteen players, and first broadcast on August 2, 1937, since when it has been frequently on the air.

In 1764, Mozart and his father paid a visit to England. During that time Mozart's father was taken ill, and in his convalescence went to the village of Chelsea and stayed at the house of Dr. Randal in Lower Ebury Street. Owing to the enforced inactivity, Mozart, who was then eight years old, turned his hand to composition and wrote his first three symphonies, of which this one to be heard this afternoon was the first.

* An appeal on behalf of THE EAST SUSSEX ASSOCIATION FOR THE BLIND (Registered under the Blind Persons Act, 1920) by THE RT. HON. EARL DE LA WARR, President of the Board of Education
One of the special objects of the East Sussex Association for the Blind is to see that the blind persons in its care are living in satisfactory and happy conditions. A number of elderly blind women have no friends or relatives who can care for them, and for the last four years the Association has been accumulating a fund to set up its own residential home for such people. Suitable premises are available, and, thanks to a generous legacy, the purchase money is in hand. But the committee cannot proceed unless they have additional funds to adapt, equip, and furnish the house for its new purpose. Each resident will have her own bed-sitting room, and a skilled staff will care for their needs. f2,500 to enable the Association to realise its ambition and to open the Home free of debt is being appealed for this evening.

A melodrama by Patrick Ridden , based on the famous story by Victor Hugo. With music specially composed by Rotert Chignell
Episode 10, ' The Decision of Javert'in which Henry Ainley plays the part of Valjean
Baliol Holloway as Javert
Margaretta Scott as Cosette Patrick Waddington as Marius
Play produced by John Cheatle
After his release from the galleys, in which he served an unjust sentence of nineteen years, Jean Valjean , the peasant hero of ' Les Miserables ' becomes wealthy, kindly, and philanthropic. In the town of Fonthil, of which he is made Mayor, he adopts a child, Cosette, but his happiness is soon taken from him by the brutal Javert, his one-time slavemaster of the galleys, now an Inspector of Police. Javert has his victim sent to the galleys again, but Valjean escapes, and, with Cosette, flees to Paris.
Previous instalments have told you of the pair's ceaseless persecution by Javert, and how, after the passing of years, Cosette falls in love with a young revolutionary named Marius. Marius, Javert, and Valjean find themselves at the same barricade in the ententes of 1832 and Valjean saves Javert's life.
In the last episode Valjean, with the wounded Marius on his back, made a desperate bid for freedom through the Paris sewers.
Today's instalment provides a key situation in the story, and Javert struggling between his senses of duty and mercy, causes the story to take an unexpected turn.
