Norman O'Neill and the Haymarket Theatre were almost inseparable terms. O'Neill was first appointed Music Director of the Haymarket in 1908 and, with one short break, he had been there for a quarter of a century. It was from his pen that a great deal of the delightful music incidental to the Haymarket plays has come. One of his earliest commissions was to write the incidental music to Maeterlinck's The Blue Bird in 1909 ; some of that music has been in concert programmes for nearly twenty-five years, and listeners will agree that it is still as welcome as ever it was. In 1920 he wrote the music to Barrie's Mary Rose ; that, too, still delights us.
Until his recent death, he was a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, and a member of the Board of the Royal Philharmonic Society, as was, by the way, his grandfather, Dr. Callcott, a hundred years ago.

In four talks beginning today, Dr. Matthews will examine the parts that can be played by various, elements of the human personality in the discovery and understanding of the Divine. Not one but many ' signposts ' point to God; and it is their cumulative effect that carries conviction. On January 30 Dr. Matthews will answer listeners' questions. An appeal on behalf of the VARIETY ARTISTES' LADIES' GUILD by TOMMY HANDLEY
The Variety Artistes' Ladies' Guild and Orphanage, founded in 1906, relieves suffering among women and children of the Variety profession.
Miss Gracie Fields, President of the organisation, has given a beautiful Home at Peacehaven where twenty-five orphan children reside, but unfortunately there are many other children for whom there is no room, and it is for these, and widows, sick and poor, for whom this appeal is being made. Maternity cases receive special attention.
Calls on the fund this year have been heavier than ever, and money is urgently needed to carry on the work of caring for those whose relations, while they were alive or while they were able to work, not only provided laughter in abundance, but ungrudgingly gave their services in the cause of every charity but their own.
