Schubert's song ' The Wanderer ' was written in 1816, when the composer was nineteen years of age. In 1822 Schubert took the second melody (beginning at the words ' The Sun himself shines wan and cold ') and used it as the principal theme for his ' Wanderer Fantasia ' for piano solo. In 1856 Liszt arranged the Fantasia for piano and orchestra, and he stated in a letter that ' the whole of the conclusion of the C major Fantasia I have rewritten in modern pianoforte form, and I natter myself that Schubert would not be displeased with it.' Throughout Liszt has, of course, added a certain amount of his own material and embellishments.

This Quintet first broadcast in 1929 and has appeared at the microphone very frequently since then. John MacArthur , the leader, took up music at an early age. At the age of eight he was billed as the ' boy prodigy '- with good reason, for he was capable of giving not only vocal solos, but also creditable performances on the cornet, violin, and piano. A year later he concentrated on the study of the violin, and this is now the instrument on which he excels.
For a time MacArthur was deputy leader of the Scottish Orchestra. In addition, he has led the Spa Orchestra at Scarborough, conducted operatic societies, played with the Fellowes Quartet, been in charge of a military band, and performed on many concert platforms as a soloist.

In January, 1932, in a memorable speech at the Albert Hall , the Prince of Wales discussed the problem of unemployment and suggested ways in which every local community could help to deal with it.
In January, 1934, the Prince broadcast the result of his own observations of the work that was being done to enable unemployed people to make good use of their unoccupied time.
Tonight the President of the National
Council of Social Service, Lord Bledisloe, will describe the progress that has been made in the last two years and suggest ways in which voluntary help can be given to further the efforts that are being made by unemployed people to employ their empty time with advantage.

And after that five other tales telling of Gerda's adventures when she went in search of her playmate, stolen by the Snow Queen : the story of the Flower Garden of the Old Woman who knew magic, the story of the Princess who advertised for a husband, the story of the Robber Girl, the story of the Lapp Woman and the Finn Woman, and the story of what happened in the Snow Queen's Palace-and of what happened after that..... Well, attention, please !
