This is the first of a series of broadcasts which will give a picture of an English countryside which has so far escaped the ravages of speculative builders and the ugliness of filling stations. The denizens of this district, close to the Scottish border, go about their work, find their own amusements, and are one with nature. Here live those who can thatch ricks and tickle trout, who see more than a 'yellow primrose ' in a primrose by a river's brim, and a warning in a red sky at morning. Wilfrid Roberts lives among these people and knows them as well as he knows the cattle and poultry of his farm. The hill shepherd with his lonely life ; the housewife clattering in clogs out to the byre to milk the cows; the wood-man slicing the hazel and plaiting it into the hedge; the isolated miner keeping whippet or racing pigeon for sport and profit; the district nurse cycling in all weathers on her errand of mercy; these and others will come into this interesting series of talks which are to go through the spring.

The snag of an art critic's life is that he is assessing something of no tangible value. The professional critic, or taster, of wine smells the bouquet and tastes the flavour of the sample, and knows of his sensitiveness and experience just what it is worth ; the professional critic, or inspector, of milk calls science to his aid and knows whether it is diluted with water or polluted with germs. But with a work of art, where reaction to it is a matter of opinion, tho most experienced critic may be hopelessly at sea. Will the majority of the future wish to tar and feather the works of Epstein, or to set him on Olympus And who will be the next Romney of Cavendish Square? Eric Newton, who broadcasts this evening, is art critic on the Manchester Guardian.
First Concert

This concert, the first of six made up of programmes surveying the whole field of present-day British Music, opens appropriately with Elgar's Overture, Cockaigne '. This spirited picture of London is already well known to listeners. The new symphony, by U. 0. Morris, a Professor at the Royal College of Music, is described by the composer as of a somewhat sombre character. Its three movements are orthodox in form and scored for a moderate orchestra. The symphony is dedicated to Vaughan Williams. Delius's ' Song of the High Hills ' belongs to a period of full maturity in the composer's career. It has been described as a work full of a sense of spacious solitudes and far horizons. Constant Lambert's ' The Rio Grande ' is a rhapsodic study of modern dance rhythms, constituting a setting of a poem by Sacheverell Sitwell. Sir Alexander Mackenzie 's brilliant overture, ' Britannia ', concludes the programme.
