WILLIAM FAULKES , who died on January 21 last year, was a Liverpool organist of renown. He was born in 1863 and his first church was that of St. John the Baptist; in 1886 he took the post of organist at St. Margaret's, Anfield, in Liverpool, and held the position until his death forty-six years afterwards. A memorial to him was unveiled in St. Margaret's Church on the anniversary of his death. Faulkes was a composer for the organ of some distinction, and hundreds of his compositions have been published.

THE RUSSIAN PUBLISHER, Belaiev, who founded the celebrated publishing house that bears his name, was one of the most remarkable of those men who helped to make modern Russian music a European influence. Cultured and wealthy, he collected round him the principal Russian composers of his day, and without seeking profit or stinting expense, he published lavishly and intelligently all the music these men chose to write. Belaiev's publishing activities may be said to have endowed a school and advanced a nation.
Many of these composers, anxious to make a gesture of their gratitude, made a habit of paying homage to Belaiev in the form of certain compositions written to be performed on the Friday evenings when they customarily met at the house of their hospitable publisher. These little works, mostly in the form of chamber music, were labours of love and are in ton-sequence charming rather than important. There are sixteen in all, written by Rimsky-Korsakov, Liadov, Glazounov, Borodin, Sokolov, amongst others, and published under the title of Les Vendredis.

An appeal on behalf of THE BLAINA AND DISTRICT HOSPITAL AND CONVALESCENT HOME by IRENE VANBRUGH

THE BLAINA AND DISTRICT HOSPITAL serves a large depressed industrial area in the North-west Division of Monmouthshire. It has hitherto derived its income almost entirely from workers in the coal mines, who voluntarily paid a proportion of their weekly wages at the pit-head. The income from this source has now shrunk to a comparatively small sum, as during most of last winter 94 per cent. of the insurable population were unemployed. They can make no more than a small weekly contribution out of their meagre means.

The Maternity Wing was opened two years ago by the Duke and Duchess of York. Owing to the malnutrition of the adult population, this extension is more necessary than ever before. The sum of £2,500 is urgently needed to meet current expenses and outstanding debts.

CANADA
TONIGHT'S RELAY from Canada in celebration of her national day, marks an epoch, for apart from Canada's contributions to the Christmas Day programmes for 1932 and 1933, this is the first special programme broadcast from Canada since the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission was officially inaugurated in 1933. An article by Mr. Gladstone Murray , who went out to Canada last year to advise the Government of Canada on the development of broadcasting in the Dominion, is on page 967.
It is of interest to note that in the series of Empire Day programmes which has been planned, Canada, with Newfoundland, is to give the broadcast of 1935. The first was broadcast from the United Kingdom in 1933, and the second by Australio this year.
