Mr. A. A. Humbles: 'A Year on Two Wheels '
There may have been methods of getting a job as original as that employed by Mr. Humbles, but there can surely never have been a more arduous one. He cycled over 34,000 miles in eleven months last year, and so beat the record put up by Marcel Planes twenty-one years before. Of his experiences and sensations; how lie was received at the winning post and, the record beaten, went on cycling until the end of the year, by which time he had covered 36,007 miles in 360 days, will be told in this original broadcast this evening. Mr. Humbles landed his job, and who will say he did not deserve it ?
A topical supplement to the week's programmes
Fresh talent in a variety programme is always as needful and invigorating as the inclusion of old favourites, and for that and sentimental reasons Mrs. Jack Hylton and her Boys in their Dance Band will be accorded a welcome tonight. This is their first appearance in front of the microphone, and listeners will be making the acquaintance of a band that has soon made a name for itself since its comparatively recent formation. Popular acts in the bill include Norman Long, Tessie O'Shea, and Julian Rose, all of whom made a big hit at the Radio Exhibition at Olympia. Dale and O'Malley make a welcome return to the microphone after an absence of six months, while the famous and popular Hetty King will give some of her male impersonations. She stands alone in a specialised line which has found few exponents among the younger members of her profession.
