Under the direction of JOHAN HOCK from Queen's College Chambers Lecture
Hall, Birmingham A STRING OCTET
Gliere was born in 1875 and studied at the Moscow Conservatoire under Taneiev and. Ippolitov-Ivanov, and since 1920 has been a professor of composition at the State Conservatoire, Moscow. Sir WALFORD DAVIES
Following Ernest Newman 's six interesting talks, Sir Walford Davies returns to the microphone this evening to give the first of six talks on ' The Unexpected in Music '. He will discuss, with numerous examples at the piano, the sudden turns of melody, harmony, and rhythm which often arrest the ear in the otherwise even course of symphony and sonata movements. Most of the examples will be taken from Beethoven, for he is one of the richest of classical masters in unexpected effects.

Tonight Mr. C. G. Graves is to explain in detail the new plans for Children's Hour broadcasts, as was announced last week. It will interest listeners to know that in the future there is to be more co-operation between the different Children's Hours, making for greater variety, and that the time allotted to the broadcasts is to be extended. The number of children who regularly write and ask why the Children's Hour is not an hour at all, but only three-quarters of one, are to get their wish at last.
