' Cleaning up the Fruit Trees '
C. H. Middleton and A. N. Rawes
This afternoon C. H. Middleton is once again to bring to the microphone A. N. Rawes , the Royal Horticultural Society's fruit expert, to discuss the cleaning up of fruit trees - winter pruning, preventive and curative measures against pests and diseases, and so forth. Listeners will remember the invaluable advice Mr. Rawes has given them over the air on the growing of fruit trees, from pruning to spraying, and general work in the fruit garden.

' From head hunting to the Hallelujah Chorus '
Kate Hughes
Today's missionary talk is to be about the people of the Lushai Hills, on the border of Burma, amongst whom Kate Hughes , of the Presbyterian Church of Wales Mission, has been working for many years. Fifty years ago they were a nation of head-hunters, remote from civilisation. Today, owing to nearly forty years' work by the Mission, there are 65,000 Christians in the country, 300 churches, and 200 elementary schools. Miss Hughes is to describe how she took a choir of children of head-hunters on a singing tour through India, the programme varying from Lushai hymns to the Hallelujah Chorus. They were welcomed everywhere, and before returning, they broadcast in Calcutta.
THE STRATTON STRING
QUARTET:
George Stratton (violin) ; Carl Taylor (violin); Watson Forbes (viola);
John Moore (violoncello) Guy Ropartz, whose Quartet No. 3 in G will be heard this afternoon, was born in 1864 and comes of an old Breton family. His master was Cesar Franck whose declared disciple he is. These two influences, the Breton and the Franck, have coloured all his music ; yet although Franck is his model and Breton the root of his inspiration, his composition shows strong originality, combined with a character that is both individual and wholly French.
This evening, and on alternate Sundays, listeners are to have the opportunity of hearing what the native of some foreign country thinks of us, and how he sees us. A native of Japan, France, Holland or Belgium, Italy, Germany, Czechoslovakia or Jugoslavia, will come to the microphone, not necessarily in this order, and frankly state his views of Great Britain and her politics, her customs, peculiarities as he sees them, and so forth. The type of speaker will not be drawn from the ranks of politicians or diplomats -he "will be what we describe as ' the man in the street '.

An appeal on behalf of WORKINGTON INFIRMARY by Alderman JOHN CASSON , Mayor of Workington
This year is the Golden Jubilee of the Workington Infirmary, which was built on a small scale in 1884 and has gradually expanded in size until it now consists of two men's wards, a women's ward, a children's ward, and a maternity ward, together with an X-ray and massage department.
In view of the expansion of Workington and the advance of medical science, it has been decided to form a fund to celebrate the hospital's jubilee, and with the proceeds of this to build a new block house, an enlarged X-ray department, and a better-equipped massage department in order to cope with the needs of this busy industrial district.
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged, and should be addressed to Alderman John Casson , [address removed].
