A Running Commentary on the International Rugby Union
Football Match by Captain H. B. T. Wakelam from Twickenham
See the short article on page 14.
This match is always the first of the six international matches of the season. Last season Wales were the champions, and Scotland won the 'wooden spoon'.
Today's opening match against
England, however, does not augur well for Wales, for Twickenham is notoriously their bogey ground. They played their first international there as long ago as 1910, but it was not until 1933 that Wales won a game. They have been playing internationals since their first game at Blackheath in 1880-not every year, but almost every year. There was no match in 1881, and the next year they only met the North of England. No matches again in 1898 or 1899, or, of course, in the war years. Of matches played between England and Wales, England have won twenty-four, Wales eighteen, and six have been drawn.
