Van Phillips, who has created a record by being on the air with his Dance Band for fifteen weeks in succession, is to create a precedent this evening when he will make history in the jazz world by introducing into his band four French horns. The French horn has always been a particular love of his. It has one of the purest tone colours, he says, in the whole range of orchestral instruments. It is one of the most difficult instruments to play and one of the most difficult to write for.
Tonight's innovation will give Van Phillips an entirely new section. He does all his own orchestrations, and the sixteen pieces to be heard this evening have been selected expressly for the purpose of exploiting horn tone-colour. If the experiment meets with the approval of listeners, he hopes to make the horn section a permanent feature of his orchestra. It is interesting news that the four French horns are those of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
