Smetana's opera The Secret was produced at the New Czech -Theatre, Prague, in 1878-twelve years later than The Bartered Bride. It was the composer's last opera but one ; he was already deaf when he wrote it. Like The Bartered Bride, it is full of scenes of the life of the people, and the music is as Kay and characteristic as anything
Smetana ever wrote.

She herself has been a frequent visitor to the microphone as an exponent of both classical and lighter music. Right from the pioneer days of broadcasting she has been a deputy BBC pianist ; and more recently she conducted and orchestrated over sixty of the Ridgeway Parades. She also filled the role of soloist when Scarlatti was the subject of the ' Foundations of Music ' series.

' Ice Hockey '
E. H. GREEN
This evening Captain E. H. Green is to give a short history of ice hockey with a brief explanation of the rules (penalties and so forth). He will discuss rinks and teams, personalities in the game, and compare English and Canadian players. Opportunities in the future for young players, the growth and future of the game, and new rinks ; important games in the near future, the progress of the League-these and many other things will be dealt with in his talk.
Captain Eric Green himself used to play outside left for England at hockey and has written several books on the game. He played ice hockey for many years before the war, when the game was known as ' bandy '. Since it was introduced into London and the provinces, he has been one of its keenest supporters and is considered among the best critics of ' the fastest game in the world '.

Fantasia (La Boutique fantasque) (The
Fantastic Toyshop) . .Rossini, Respighi
Respighi was first made known to us in this country by the ballet La boutique fantasque. The music is taken from some of the light pieces, chiefly written for pianoforte, which Rossini composed in his last years, and Respighi has arranged them to make a delightfully fresh and dainty ballet. On the stage the dolls in the shop come to life and* dance. The ballet consists of a Cossack Dance, a Nocturne, a Mazurka, an Italian Tarantella, a slow Waltz, a boisterous Can-Can, and a Galop.
