Marie Pauline Hall, born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, studied first under her father, who was a well-known harpist, and later under Sir Edward Elgar. In 1899 she gained distinction at the Royal Academy of Music, and was enabled to further her studies under Professor Johann Kruse. Later, she was admitted to the Prague Conservatoire of Music, where she completed her musical studies under the celebrated Professor Sevcik. Miss Hall made her debut in Vienna in 1902, after which she appeared in London, where she was acclaimed as one of the finest of living English violinists. Since then she has had a brilliant career and has earned tor herself an international reputation.

KATHLEEN DAUNT (mezzo-soprano) Grieg's songs are the kind which it is good to sing and good to hear. He wrote almost a hundred and fifty, and though not by any means all of them are so widely known as they deserve, several of them, such as ' Ich liebe dich ', are treasured throughout the world by singers' and listeners alike.

Christian Darnton , who studied under Hindemith, is coming to the fore as a composer of chamber music. Like many of his contemporaries, he is inclined towards austerity in his approach to his art. Ornament and sensuous colouring are reduced to a minimum, and everything is conceived in terse and simple terms. Purity and clarity of style are considered more important than ' effect ', in the romantic meaning of the word.
Darnton's Quartet, though continuous, falls into four short sections together lasting approximately twelve minutes, into which is packed considerable variety of mood. The first section, moderato determinato, steadily slackens in speed within the space of twenty-one bars which are followed by four bars in very slow time, leading into the second movement, andante, which is a Passacaglia on the theme F-E-D-C sharp. Here the composer adopts the opposite process and realises an uninterrupted quickening of speed spread over thirty-eight bars, finally reaching allegro. The four bars of cadenza and two bars in very slow time that follow, lead into a third section based on a fifteenth-century choral. Then comes a short development of the opening section, to be followed by another Passacaglia, in very quick time, based on the previous F-E-D-C sharp theme. At the end of this Passacaglia section the first violin plays in 24/8 time, the second violin and viola in i/i time, and the 'cello in 5/4 time. Here the choral is again heard on the second violin and viola.
