The famous Russian Singer in Songs from many Lands
Accompanied by The B B C VARIETY ORCHESTRA, conducted by MARK H.
LUBBOCK
This is the third solo broadcast in England of this famous interpreter of Russian, French, Spanish, and gypsy songs who has been called ' The Galli-Curci of the Air ' Zinaida Nicolina made her debut over here in ' In Town Tonight' last year.
She was born in mid-Russia, and her earliest musical recollections are of peasants and gypsies singing on her family's estates. She began her musical career as a pianist, studying at the Conservatory at Tiflis, but she wanted to become a professional singer, and as her family were against it, she took lessons secretly. In the Revolution she escaped to the Crimea and thence in disguise to Turkey. The Princess Rafia, daughter of Abdul Hamid , came to her rescue, and for nearly a year she lived with her.
One day, when she was singing in the drawing-room of a friend, Count Michael Tolstoi heard her and arranged for her a series of concerts in Paris. She was an instant success. Balief, director of the famous Chauve Souris Theatre, heard her and made her a star in New York. She is a great favourite on the air in America.

DOROTHEA HELMRICH
(mezzo-soprano) (Soloist, DOROTHEA HELMRICH> )
Mahler's cycle of 'Songs of a Wayfarer', completed in December, 1883, was his earliest really significant com- position. The four songs contain most of the musical elements of the mature Mahler in their simplest forms.
The cycle as a whole reminds one vividly of Housman's ' Shropshire Lad'.
