One of Debussy's fellow students at Rome tells us that as a young man Debussy 'delighted in all that was refined, delicate, complicated, and strange...... What appealed to him most of all was the expression of intimate feelings. Human productions that were planned on a grand scale astonished him, without arousing either his admiration or his enthusiasm.....' The charming 'Petite suite', originally written in 1886 for piano duet and later orchestrated by Biisser, is, indeed 'intimate' music, and characteristic of the composer's love of refinement and delicacy.

Adila Fachiri (nee d'Aranyi) and her sister, Jelli, are great-nieces of Joachim. the famous violin player and teacher of a generation ago. These two girls were naturally among his pupils, and Adila, the elder of the two, was one of his favourites; she often appeared in public with him, playing violin duets. This practice of duet playing has had its sequel in the occasional and delightful association of the two sisters in works for two violins and orchestra by Bach and others. Adila Fachiri has inherited from her great-uncle not only his favourite Strad violin, but his broad, classical manner of playing it as well as his veneration for the classics.
Kathleen Long came to London from
Bury St. Edmunds at the age of thirteen to study at the Royal College of Music, with which she has been ever since associated, as she is now on the teaching staff. She is very well known to listeners, both as pianoforte soloist and as a chamber music player.

Ernest Bloch is the first composer to express successfully the Jewish national idiom in music. It is not my desire to attempt a "reconstruction" " of Jewish music says Bloch. ' It is the Jewish soul that interests me, the complex, glowing, agitated soul that I feel vibrating throughout the Bible..... All this is in us, all this is in me, and it is the better part of me. It is all this that I endeavour to hear in myself and to transcribe in my music ; the venerable emotion of the race that slumbers way down in our soul'.
Even in his more or less abstract music, such as the Piano Quintet and the Concerto Grosso, ' the emotion of the race ' is expressed. The Concerto Grosso, designed on classical lines, was written during 1924-5 for Bloch's pupils at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Stephen Wearing was born at Liverpool in 1900. He studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music, where he won the Chappell Gold Medal for piano in 1922 and the Halle Scholarship in 1923. In the same year Mr. Wearing made his first appearance in London at a Patron's Fund Concert conducted by Dr. Adrian Boult.
