The playing of this orchestra is marked by a high standard of technical ability and excellent ensemble. E. Martin Browne was a producer for several amateur companies until 1927 ; notably the Angmering Shakespeare
Festivals, and the York Settlement Community Players (who have more than once been in the British Drama League Finals). He then went to America and worked with B. Iden Payne (who was Miss Homiman's original producer at the Gaiety Theatre, Manchester, and is now Director at Stratford-on-Avon) on his Elizabethan stage, and also did modem plays with him.
Since then Martin Browne has produced many religious plays, notably The Rock (T. S. Eliot 's church-building pageant play) at Sadler's Wells, which played to ' house full ' boards for a fortnight and made over a thousand pounds profit; and Murder in the Cathedral, now running at the Mercury Theatre, London.
His talk this evening will show how the structure of verse helps the actor, and how the actor should use it.

Darius Milhaud first attracted attention as a member of the famous group of young French composers known as Les Six. He is now considered one of the foremost of the modem French school. A fairly prolific composer, he combines great fluency of technique with a logical and concise style of utterance.
Milhaud's Eighth Quartet was com- missioned by Mrs. Coolidge last year. It is interesting to note that the principal theme of the first movement is derived from the letters of Mrs. Coolidge's name...
This Quartet, performed for the first time at a concert of the London Contemporary Music Centre on November 19, is the most recent work of a young English composer who is rapidly making an enviable reputation. Some ol his earliest compositions were performed at Oxford, while he was an undergraduate there. Since then he has lived in Paris and his music shows pronounced traces of that environment. He is a brilliant exponent of the art of putting the new wine of modem harmony into the old bottles of classical form (as in the variations of this Quartet).
