In his broadcast today-an interlude between Christmas Day and Boxing Day-C. H. Middleton will give a talk in keeping with the season. It will be largely reminiscent, and he has anecdotes to tell which should give many a laugh to listeners.
It is good news to gardening enthusiasts that the man who does so much for them as Middleton-both by his solo broadcasts and by bringing gardening specialists to the microphone-is to continue to give the gardening talks in the New Year. He hopes that it will be a bumper one for all who have a garden or who think of starting a garden. Next Sunday he will come to the microphone to discuss among other things some of the spring catalogues.

Listeners will once more hear the bells of the Church of the Nativity, and an account of Bethlehem and its surroundings. From the Grotto will be broadcast a description of the traditional birthplace of Our Lord. The singing will be led by the Latin Choir, and it is hoped that a Bible reading will be given in the Aramaic tongue by a member of the Syrias Church.

An appeal on behalf of THE SUSSEX MATERNITY AND
WOMEN'S HOSPITAL, BRIGHTON, by A. J. CRONIN , M.D.
The Sussex Maternity and Women's Hospital, Brighton, which is a training-school for midwives, was founded in 1831. Since then year by year the demands on it have grown, and it now receives patients from all parts of Sussex. It has only 50 beds for normal and abnor- mal maternity cases, including 11 gynaecological beds for surgical cases. In spite of this scarcity, 1,391 babies were born last year in the hospital and in the districts attended by the doctors and midwives. No fewer than 5,270 women attended the outpatient clinics, and there are 267 patients on the waiting-list at the moment.
Help is urgently needed, for it is necessary to rebuild or reconstruct the hospital to deal with all the claims made upon it, as it is the only special hospital in the county. for its special purpose. It is a tragic fact that many have to be refused admission.
This is in the main an appeal to the people of Sussex and to all those who are interested in the maternity service of the country. This appeal is the starting point of the rebuilding fund, for which it is necessary to raise £100,000.

Even in these days when the dance band reigns supreme in popular musical entertainment, many restaurants and hotels still find a straight orchestra a great attraction to their patrons. The Grand Hotel at Eastbourne has for long been noted for its excellent orchestra and its conductor and solo violinist has always been an artist of distinction. For nearly four years Leslie Jeffries has carried on the high tradition set by his predecessors.
The present programme is particularly interesting, for several of Mr. Jeffries's arrangements are included and for the first time one of his own original compositions. The latter, a tango, ' Tres Jolie ', was written for Santos Casani , the ball-room dancer, who, knowing that Mr. Jeffries played for a number of years in South America where the tango originated, suggested that he should write one.
