Evelyn Downs
Evelyn Downs , who has been in Samoa since 1922, is headmistress of the London Missionary Society's School at Papauta. She also supervises a district on the other side of the island, a district she visits during the school holidays, riding on horse-back over rough mountains and forest country. In addition, once a year she boards the famous mission ship, John Williams , and visits the coral islands of the Ellice Group.
The school at Papauta is proud of its new chapel, built in the Samoan way, without nails, and tied together with twenty-eight miles of string made from coconut husk by the girls themselves. It stands in the shadow of the hill where R. L. Stevenson is buried.

For the first time in a broadcast service from the ' Church in Trafalgar Square ' the bells of St. Martin's are to be rung instead of played, and a kindly thought will go out to Mr. W. G. Blewett , who has played them every time St. Martin's has been on the air. Some of the bells belong to a peal of twelve cast in the year 1584. The Royal Society of Cumberland Youths has its head-quarters at St. Martin's, and a detachment of the Youths will ring the bells tonight.
An appeal on behalf of WORTHING HOSPITAL, by the Mayor of Worthing, Alderman C. B. BARBER
This hospital was founded in 1829 as a small dispensary at which medicine and advice, were given to the poor of Worthing and neighbourhood. In 1882 it was moved to its present site in the Lyndhurst Road. It has now 78 beds and it treated 1,371 in-patients and 8,810 outpatients last year alone. Since 1929 the hospital has spent £45,000 worth of capital on urgent extensions, and its bank overdraft is over £14,000. Yet a new children's ward of sixteen beds and a maternity home of ten beds, which are in course of construction, remain unfinished owing to lack of funds.
Its immediate needs are to complete the above, to install a new boiler house and heating system, and to reduce the overdraft at the bank.
