With the exception of opera, Brahms excelled in every branch of musical composition. Of his many large-sized instrumental works, there are very few that cannot be described as masterpieces.
The three trios for piano, violin, and 'cello contain all Brahms's supreme qualities as a composer and remain three of the finest contributions to the literature of this particular branch of chamber music. No. 1, in B major, Op. 8, was originally published in 1854 and is, therefore, Brahms's first really ambitious work.
But in 1891 he published a revised version that, except for the scherzo, was virtually a new work. New thematic material was added to the principal theme of the three other movements and each movement reconstructed. The result is, as H. C. Coles points out, that ' in the progress of development the open countenance of youth becomes lined with the experience of age '.

The second ' rolling stone' of the new series is the popular broadcaster who has been running his Celeste Octet for twenty-three years. His life story is almost fantastic. He went to sea at the age of eleven, signed on as ship's boy on a threemasted barque, sailing from New-port, Mon., to 'Frisco, and from that moment he might have been the central figure of as thrilling a movie as was ever made. Some of his adventures and hairbreadth escapes were told for the first time in the series ' People you Hear ' in the Radio Times ; he is telling more of them over the air this evening, and his many admirers will look forward to reading them in full when they are published in book form some time this year.

After a highly successful visit to England in March, 1884, and another later in the year, Dvorak was assured of the esteem and affection of the English people. When he came again in 1890, he was naturally invited to conduct at a concert of the Philharmonic Society.
For this occasion he had brought the score and parts of a new symphony which was exceedingly well received. This was the fourth symphony (Op. 88, in G), one of his most delightful works, brim full of lovely melody and scored with those transparent orchestral colours that infallibly proclaimed the hand of Dvorak. No other composer has ever come so near to Schubert's ' linked sweetness long drawn out', and this symphony is one of the most Schubertian of all his works.
Dvorak's Fifth Symphony, 'The
New World ', ranks with Schubert's 'Unfinished' and Tchaikovsky's ' Pathetic ' as one of the most justly popular of all symphonies ; if the Fourth were better known, it would speedily rival ' The New World '.

To judge by the expression of opinion in many listeners' letters, gardening ' fans' will welcome the return of C. H. Middleton 's gardening talks to a week-day evening. On Sundays after the midday meal they can have their nap again, and on i Friday evenings listen to Middleton throughput the spring and summer. This evening he is bringing E. R. Janes to the microphone again to discuss in more detail the planning of that ideal of all gardeners-a perpetual supply for the salad bowl.

Bernard van Dieren , who died last year, was one of the most remarkable figures in the world of music. Genius so many-sided is rare in this age of specialists, but as Cecil Gray claims in .his article on page 6, van Dieren was first and foremost a musician, and tonight's Memorial Concert may help listeners to understand the respect, in which he was held by some of the leading composers of his time.
