Schubert's ' Romantic ' Overture was composed in 1819 and published later as Opus 34. Like the Overture in G minor, it was originally written for piano four-hands. The manuscript bears in Schubert's handwriting the following note : ' Written in Joseph Hiittenbrenner 's room at the City Hospital inside of three hours-and dinner missed in consequence.'

Brahms's Scherzo in E flat minor is supposed to have been written in 1851, when the composer was eighteen years of age. During the early days of his career it was his favourite work and he introduced himself with it to Joachim, Schumann, and Liszt.
When Schumann said that Brahms sprang out like Minerva fully armed, after having seen a handful of Brahms's first compositions that included this truly remarkable Scherzo in E flat minor, a work not only worthy of Beethoven, but which clearly foreshadows the masterly hand of the later Brahms, Schumann showed an extraordinarily keen perception.

This Quintet first broadcast in 1929, and has appeared at the microphone very frequently since then. John MacArthur , the leader, took up music at an early age. When only eight years old he was billed as the ' boy prodigy '—with good reason, for he was capable of giving not only vocal solos, but also creditable performances on the cornet, violin, and piano. A year later he concentrated on the study of the violin, and this is now the instrument on which he excels.
For a time MacArthur was deputy leader of the Scottish Orchestra. In addition, he has led the Spa Orchestra at Scarborough, conducted operatic societies, played with the Fellowes Quartet, been in charge of a military band, and performed on many concert platforms as a soloist.

visits
EDINBURGH
The BBC Symphony Orchestra's visit to Edinburgh is the third of the series of four provincial concerts that the Orchestra is undertaking during the 1936-37 season. This is the first time the full Symphony Orchestra has been heard in Edinburgh, although two years ago it went to Dundee, and last year to Glasgow.
These visits to important provincial centres are undertaken in response to local demands, as in most cities there exists a very great and natural curiosity to hear and see in the flesh the BBC Symphony Orchestra, which the great majority of listeners have heard only on the air.
