Irene Scharrer first studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Tobias Matthay and made her debut as a soloist at St... James's Hall in 1901, playing Mendelssohn's Rondo Capriccio and Chopin's Rondo in E flat. Like many other British artists Miss Scharrer came to the forefront during the War, when she was continually to be heard in London and the provinces playing with all the leading orchestras. Among a number of important foreign engagements Miss Scharrer has been heard at the Nikisch Concerts, at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, and with the Berlin Philharmonic Society.

This is the last broadcast of the series, ' Music of the Hours '. It will consist of arrangements of well-known chime tunes, an interesting feature of which is the appearance of the Moulton Handbell ringers from Northamptonshire. Among the tunes to be heard are: ' Highland Laddie ' and ' Silken Garter' from Derby Cathedral (the former tune recovered from old notebooks) ; ' Ladies' Lamentation ', a seventeenth-century ballad used in the chimes of Burton Parish Church ; Dr. S. S. Wesley 's two airs from Holsworthy Church, Devon ; Malchair's Gavotte from Gloucester Cathedral ; Dr. Hayes's air from Gloucester harmonised by the late Sir Henry Brewer ; ' I Vow to Thee ', played on the Derby chimes ; Samuel Webbe 's arrangement of Rockingham, as played at Newport Pagnell, Bedfordshire ; the tune ' The Little House ' written for the chimes of St. Bartholomew's Church, Dublin, with words by Mr. Pitchford ; and the song written to an old Devon folk tune by the late Lord Coleridge, Lord Chief Justice, and played by the chimes of Ottery, St. Mary, Devon, in which parish he was born.

It was a happy inspiration when the radio item known as a mosaic was invented some six years ago. It was something new, a presentation in brief, in which music was made more than a background to prose and poetry-it became a complement to it-each being chosen to suit the mood of the other, and each being the gainer thereby.
The mood of today's mosaic is that of the English countryside, both pastoral and rustic ; both Arcadia and the good earth ; both the towns-man's dream of the country and the farmer's actual life of hard work. Material will be drawn on the one hand from Elizabethan and eighteenth-century pastoral verse, and on the other from verse or prose by Wordsworth, George Bourne , D. H. Lawrence , Richard Jefferies , William Cobbett , and others.
