If the 'cello has been neglected with regard to concertos, at least it has been rather better served in the way of sonatas, particularly by the nineteenth-century composers.
Brahms's Sonata No. 2, in F, composed in 1887, is a magnificent piece of writing, terse and dramatic in expression and concentrated in thought, and the entire range of the 'cello is exploited with telling effect. The piano part is no less big in design and the music contains a fair number of expression marks that require careful interpretation.

Those interested in lawn tennis, whether as spectators of championship matches or as players of the game on the club courts, will tune in eagerly to a talk by one of our star English players, who is to speak, at the beginning of yet another season, about the game and everything concerning it.
Peggy Scriven, Yorkshire-born, living in Surrey, is a Wimbledon player, and has represented Great Britain against America in the Wightman Cup. In 1933 and again in 1934 she won the Women's Singles Championship in Paris. A few weeks ago, showing that she is at the top of her form, she won the Women's Singles at the Hard Court Tournament at Felixstowe and also the Mixed Doubles, partnered by the Belgian, L. Borman.

Here is another adventure of those ingenious domestic servants, Thomp- son, butler, and Mrs. Johnson, cook, who are in the service of a very aristocratic family, but their aristocracy has to live down a little to their diminished income, and one has the feeling that the mistress's ideas on diet are prompted by the overdraft at the bank. Thompson and Johnson, however, are not the kind of people to be done by a thing like that-even if (as they did recently) they ate the chicken bought for the master's table and sent upstairs instead the mince that was meant for the maid. With Norah Howard as Johnson and Leslie Henson as Thompson there is no limit to the fun.

A fortnight ago ' Mr. Penny ' came back on the air to the delight of countless listeners in one of the very best episodes he has given. The crying of poor Annie who was so nearly given a mixture of plaster of Paris by her father (unintentionally, of course) while her mother was at the sales was only equalled by the fine performance of Richard Goolden as the little man. Today both he and listeners will learn of the troubles that lie in store for one who is so unfailingly kind, courteous, and gentle. They may think twice before offering to deliver a parcel for a stranger, and assuredly few would show the courage displayed by this citizen with a conscience at a moment of crisis and even danger.

He knows the practical difficulties confronting the class of people among whom he works, and will tell of the steps that are taken to meet them.
