Weber's Pianoforte Sonatas
Played by FRANK MANNHEIMER
Sonata in D minor (Op. 49)
1. Allegro feroce; 2. Andante con moto; 3. Rondo: Presto
THE TWO chief contemporaries of Beethoven who brought the sonata to its highest stage of technical development, and at the same time invested it with new and richer possibilities of expression, were Schubert and Weber.
In his four pianoforte sonatas Weber may be decidedly inferior to Beethoven with regard to concentrated effort and constructive mastery, but he almost balanced such defects by his melodic fertility, his sensitive writing for the keyboard, and the warm romantic feeling which is so essentially a characteristic of all Weber's music. Being a brilliant pianist himself, he made full use of the scope of his instrument; consequently, his pianoforte sonatas contain numerous striking and original effects of colour, etc.
Weber's biographer, Spitta, tells us that he played with fiery expression, and : ' Wide stretches, easy to his long, flexible fingers, bold jumps from one part of the keyboard to another, rapid passages of thirds for one hand, or of thirds, sixths, and octaves for both, runs with accompanying chords for the same hand' (first movement of C major Sonata which was heard on Monday), ' 'such are some of his technical resources'.

Season 1933-34 - Tenth Concert
Relayed from The Queen's Hall, London
(Sole Lessees, Messrs. Chappell and Co., Ltd.)
SERGE PROKOFIEV (pianoforte)
THE B.B.C. SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
(Leader, ARTHUR CATTERALL )
Conducted by BRUNO WALTER
IN ONE YEAR, 1788, Mozart composed the three last and the three greatest symphonies he was to. write before his death three years later. They were all written within less than two months, the E flat major '(No. 39) being dated June 26, the G minor (No. 40), July 25, and the ' Jupiter ' in 3 (No. 41), August 10. Each is emotionally different, yet all are unmistakably Mozart at his very finest. The E flat Symphony is happiness itself, the ' Jupiter ' all dignity and grace, while of the G minor, Otto Jahn , Mozart's biographer, wrote that it seems to express a sorrow rising ' in a continuous climax to a wild movement, as though seeking to stifle care '. It is as though Mozart had in this triptych deliberately written in terms of music that part of his autobiography which can alone be so expressed.

ORCHESTRA Symphony No. 40, in G minor (K.550) - Mozart 1. Allegro molto; 2. Andante; 3. Minuet : Allegro; 4. Finale: Allegro assai
SERGE PROKOFIEV AND ORCHESTRA Concerto No. 5 - Prokofiev (First Performance in England) I. Allegro con brio; 2. Moderato ben accentuato ; 3. Toccata : Allegro con fuoco ; 4. Larghetto; 5. Vivo, Piu trahquillo : Coda
