Relayed from The Pavilion, Bournemouth (Symphonic Poem on a story by HANS ANDERSEN)
(Conducted by PEDRO MORALES)
'THE STORY OF A MOTHER,' by a Spanish composer comparatively new to listeners, was inspired by the story of the same name by Hans Andersen. It is a wistful little sketch of a dying child, and the grief and later resignation of its mother.
ONE of the most esteemed of Spanish composers, Joaquin Turina, was born at Seville in 1882, but had most of his musical training in Paris, his career in this and some other respects running curiously parallel with that of Falla. His name is, indeed, often associated with that of the latter, but though there is a certain general affinity in their music, there are also unmistakable differences, each having a distinct and decided personality of his own.
' The Gospel of the Nativity ' might be described as a miniature symphonic poem illustrating the following episodes or stages of the sacred story : I. On the road to Bethlehem; 2. The Nativity; 3. The Valley of the Shepherds ; 4. The Adoration of the Shepherds ; 5. The Magi crossing the Desert; 6. The Adoration of the Magi.
The music is idyllic in character and very simple in treatment.

The Churches in National Life
The Place of the Christian Church in National Life Today
The Rev. F. E. HUTCHINSON
THIS is the first of four broadcasts on the Christian Church, and will compare the prominence of the Church in the Middle Ages with the position of the collective churches today. If it is true that religious interest in our times fails to find satisfaction in institutional religion, are the churches to blame ?
This first of three talks by the Rev.
F. E. Hutchinson will pave the way for his broadcasts on the ' Churches and Social Services ' on February 14, and on ' The Relations of the Churches to one Another and to the State ' on February 21.
The series will be concluded with a discussion on ' Church and State : Establishment or Disestablishment ? ' on February 28.

In his talk tonight R.A. Watson Watt will discuss the electricity supply, and will show how the Cumulus cloud, the 'ordinary lift' of the Weather House, may develop into an 'express lift', Cumulo-Nimbus cloud, to the accompaniment of spectacular displays of electrical energy in the thunderstorm.

Some of the known facts about thunderstorms will be mentioned, as well as the many things we have still to learn about them. And a word may be said about the manner in which thunderstorms send out their own wireless signals.

In the second part of his talk, the anticyclone will be discussed, and stress will be laid on the difference between the ideal holiday anticyclone and the rather gloomy anticyclone of winter. Finally, there may be time to look at some further reasons why the forecaster's lot is not a happy one.
