THE POPULAR BALLET of the Dance of the Hours from La Gioconda takes place, on the stage, in the Palace of Alvise, a Lord of the Inquisition. At the end of the ballet Alvise draws back the curtains which disclose to the horrified guests the apparently lifeless body of his wife Laura, who, he is persuaded, has deceived him.

A Play about the Brontes
Adapted for broadcasting by THE
AUTHOR
THE RECENT revival of interest in Bronte biography found expression in several plays based on the life story of this famous family, of which Clemence Dane 's Wild Decembers (1932) was one of the most successful.
The romantic life of the Brontes lends itself to dramatic treatment. and Clemence Dane has very skilfully woven into her play most of the chief episodes in the life of this remarkable family. The result is a powerful and vivid drawing of each character and a highly satisfactory attempt to secure the atmosphere of the Haworth Parsonage.
It is, indeed, fascinating to contemplate Charlotte, Emily, and Anne carrying out their household duties with the orderliness and considered planning so characteristic of the period. Then after the day's duties are completed, the Rev. Patrick Bronte having retired to his study, the three girls seek seclusion in different parts of the house and, unknown to each other, fill up notebooks with poetry and prose In this manner ' Wuthering Heights and ' Jane Eyre ' were created.
