THIS AFTERNOON'S BROADCAST will trace the history of flat decoration and low reliefs from times before the Conquest down to the present day.
The earliest workers in gold and silver bronze ; the blacksmith. Then fine needlework, metal work, and embroidery, which for centuries have been famous abroad. The art of gardening, and of engraving on wood and metals. Then craftsmanship, which lapsed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, only to recover its prestige in the Gothic Revival, but never quite its quality of design.
The stimulus given to craftsmanship and design in the nineteenth century was to a certain extent negatived by machinery and mass production. These fine and essentially British Arts are today slowly regaining their mastery of the trade.

THOMAS KEN may be known to comparatively few today, though to tens of thousands his morning and evening hymns are familiar : ' Awake, my soul, and with the sun ', and ' Glory to Thee, my God, this night '.
Like Jeremy Taylor , the subject of the last broadcast, he was a brave man, and perhaps the braver of the two, for
Taylor was brave in loyalty to his king ; Ken in loyalty to his conscience.
He is famous as being one of the ' seven bishops ' who refused to publish the Declaration of Indulgence by James II, for which he was committed to the Tower. He again obeyed his conscience by refusing to take the oath of allegiance to William and Mary, for which he was deprived of his see.
Born in Hertfordshire, he is supposed to have spent his boyhood, after the death of his parents, in the bouse of Izaak Walton , who had married his half sister, Anne. He was a scholar of Winchester, and his name is to be seen there cut in the cloisters. At Oxford he gave alms to the poor, and, a poor man himself always, he was later in his life to give the best part of a legacy of £4,000 away in charity.
He was admired for his purity and fidelity to conscience, yet a chaige of narrowness was levelled against him, but the man who refused Nell Gwyn lodgings at his prebendal house on the Court's visit to Winchester, and turned the Duchess of Poitsmouth from the King's room when he lay dying, yet absolved Charles II on his death bed. And even for this he was rebuked.
Dryden's description of the poor paison of a town, from Chaucer, has been supposed to be a portrait of Ken ; Monckton Milnes (Lord Houghton) wrote verses on his tomb ; he is buried under the East window of Frome parish church, and in t888 a window was set up to his memory in Wells Cathedral.
