THIS EVENING Professor John Hilton will talk of nimble fingers and cunning hands. He will compare the craftsman and the skilled manipulator, and show where the hand still beats the machine, and where it has been,displaced by it.
He will talk of machines, of wonder machines, and monster machines, and machine tools. Of the power behind the machine, and of the fiddling work, and boring work, and drudgery that the machine has saved.
He will touch on the capital cost of machinery, and its maximum use ; on the displacement of labour ; on the progressive manager's dilemma, and the way through it.

NICOLAS MEDTNER, one of the foremost of twentieth-century Russian composers, can scarcely be considered as belonging to the post-War movement; indeed, he has often been called ' the Russian Brahms ', and his music is in the direct line of the tradition running through Beethoven and Brahms.
Practically all Medtner works belong to the chamber music genre ; he has written a number of songs, pianoforte pieces, and instrumental works, all constructed for intimate performance.
Although by no means without warmth and fancy, almost all he has written is, in the mind of the composer, absolute music. He writes nothing for the orchestra, since, in these days of orchestral colour, orchestral works imply almost always a programme ; nor for the stage, for which he appears to have no fondness ; even the music of his songs remains abstract so far as the text permits it. But this is not to say that his music -lacks poetry and imagination ; on the other hand, they are perhaps its distinguishing feature.
Since the War Medtner has made extensive tours in Europe. He has his own following in this country, and this programme will give pleasure to a great number of musicians who value the preservation of a tradition, which is, in these days, none too much in evidence in the music of modern composers. Medtner was born in December, 1879, and showed himself a brilliant student at the Moscow Conservatoire where, for a short time, he was later to become one of the Professors.
