' Newfoundland-Labrador ':
Sir WILFRED GRENFELL
No ONE alive to-day has led a more adventurous, romantic and useful life than Sir Wilfred Grenfell. House surgeon at the London Hospital as a young man, he chose the adventurer's career, fitted out the first hospital ship for the North Sea Fisheries, and cruised with the fishermen from the Bay of Biscay to Iceland.
He was the pioneer of Labrador, to which country he went in 1892. There he built five hospitals, seven nursing stations-orphanages, schools, co-operative stores-created industry and cared for the children. He still cruises every year along the Northern Newfoundland and Labrador coasts as Surgeon in charge and Master of the hospital steamer, Strathcona II.
Britain and America have honoured him ; he served as a major in the Harvard Surgical Unit in France in the Great War ; he has written a large number of thrilling books, ' Forty Years for Labrador ', published in 1932, being the story of his life ; and this afternoon schools are to have the thrill and privilege of hearing him talk to them over the microphone.

Mr. THEODORE BESTERMAN : How
Psychical Research is Done'
THIS SERIES, which is sifting scientifically phenomena that are not of the earth, is now getting under way. Last Friday's introduction over, tonight's talk will get down to business, and listeners will hear exactly how psychical research is carried on. Each one of these intensely interesting broadcasts is leading on to yet more thrilling matter under this head after the manner of a serial, only the chapters, as it were, are of different authorship.
Theodore Besterman , who carries on the story tonight, is librarian and editor of the Society for Psychical Research, and Special Lecturer in the University of London School of Librarianship. Two of his publications are translations from the German, both by Professor Hans Driesch : ' Mind and Body, a Criticism of Psychophysical Parallelism ' 1927, and ' Psychical Research : the Science of the Supernatural ', 1933. He edited ' Transactions of the Fourth International Congress for Psychical Research, Athens, 1930 ', is the author of ' A four months tour of Psychical Investigation, 1929', and has written numerous papers on Psychical Research.

THE KALEVALA is a great Finnish epic poem, running into fifty cantos, and, like all Finnish legend, magic plays an important part throughout. Sibelius, a true Finn, has been considerably influenced by his country's mythology, and he has described in terms of music several episodes of the Kalevala. ' The Swan of Tuonela ' is prefaced with the following description : ' Tuonela, land of death, a hell of Finnish mythology, is surrounded by a river with black waters and a rapid current, on which the Swan of Tuonela floats majestically, singing'. This work is scored for the unusual combination of cor Anglais solo, one oboe, one bass clarinet, two bassoons, four horns, three trumpets, harp, timpani, bass drum, and muted strings. The last-mentioned are divided and sub-divided into many parts forming a rich and picturesque texture of string background. The music is full of mystery and not a little gloom.
'The Return of Lemminkainen ' is a direct contrast to ' The Swan of Tuonela ', since the music is scored, with brilliant effect, for full orchestra, and the tempo is extremely rapid. It is intended to describe the return of Lemminkainen from his unsuccessful expedition against Pohjola.
