PROGRAMMES of music for two pianos were a fairly frequent occurrence during the nineteenth century, and many of the eminent pianists of the day gave concerts together. Perhaps the greatest duo of all time was Ferruccio Busoni and Egon Petri , who gave many joint recitals in London up to the time of Busoni's death, in 1924. Although the great composers have not written many works for two pianos, a wide repertoire is available in the form of transcriptions, such as the Debussy ' Petite Suite ' and Strauss's Waltz, ' Artist's Life '. In fact, a great deal of classical music, such as the early symphonies of Haydn and Mozart, sounds quite as effective on two pianos as it does on the orchestra.

Broadcasting House this PROGRAMME is particularly interesting since it includes the lively Toccata in B minor by Eugene Gigout. Gigout was born at Nancy in 1844 and died at Paris in 1925. From the age of thirteen he was educated as a church musician, and while at the Niedermeyer School he studied under Saint-Saens. He was a prolific composer of vocal, church, and organ music, all of which, although rather austere in character, shows the hand of a fine craftsman and sensitive musician.

An appeal on behalf of Homes FOR THE AGED POOR, by Lady MARTIN HARVEY
NEARLY six years ago, on March 11, 1928, an appeal for these homes was broadcast, and this evening Lady
Martin Harvey , who describes the charity as ' the most moving ', is to appeal to the generosity of listeners again. These homes in London-nineteen in number-provide free medical attention, and shelter from the mercilessness of life nearly two hundred men and women who have been unable to save against old age, and provide them with rooms rent free into which they may bring their bits and pieces.
The governess, who perhaps has had to support a mother out of her meagre salary, finds herself at an age when she is unemployable, confronted by the workhouse. From such a fate these homes can save her. The people they cater for are practically destitute, and there is a long waiting list of those whose plight is appalling until more homes can be built.
Those without a soul to care for them ; a man and wife ; a brother and sister ; two sisters, may live together here happy and contented. They come from a class that is overlooked.

IN THESE difficult and complex modem days Man's moods are perhaps more subtle and varied than they have ever been before; and yet, fundamentally, he remains the same being as in the old Morality play Everyman, in which allegorical portrait of themselves our mediaeval forebears were shown their own likeness-a figure emotionally reacting to temptations and so forth, that were depicted as symbolical beings around Everyman on the stage.
In this new series of broadcasts, which begins tonight and will be continued each second Sunday of the month throughout the year, listeners are to be shown, in much the same way, an allegorical reflection of themselves under the guise and title of the Pilgrim journeying through life. Prose and poetry and music will be selected to delineate various moods and phases; the first broadcast-tonight-being the mood of Hope ; the second, of Faith; the third, of Joy.
