(Composed in Paris, 1763)
IN THE WELL known Koechel catalogue of Mozart's works the first five, in order of composition, are tiny piano works, each of about twenty or thirty bars in length ; they are the compositions of an infant, for Mozart was no more than six years old at the time.
The next ten compositions in the catalogue are the Sonatas for Violin and Pianoforte, which are being performed in this week's Foundations. The first of these was composed in 1763, when Mozart was seven, and the tenth in 1764 when he was eight. They have been included amongst the Foundations, not simply because they are wonderful as being the work of a child scarcely more than Kindergarten age, but because they are first-hand witnesses of Mozart's later development.

Another Test of the Listener's Ear
LAST WEEK you may have listened to one or other (or both) of two little programmes entitled Who Was That?, in which listeners were invited to recognise the voices of a number of unannounced broadcasters. Tonight's game carries the same idea into a new field, substituting places for people.
-Within a quarter of an hour you will be taken by microphone to a number of places in Great Britain. The announcer will give each place a number but no name, leaving you to judge for yourselves from the characteristic sounds picked up by the microphone what type of place you are visiting and possibly exactly what place it is. The solution will be broadcast at the end of the programme of dance music that follows.
IN TONIGHT'S broadcast John W. Green , well known as the composer of a new show, Mr. Whittington, now such a success in the North of England, will play some piano duets with Carroll Gibbons. John W. Green is also the composer of the ' Night Club' suite which is to be conducted by Constant Lambert in a broadcast performance later in the month.
