Here is the unvarnished story of a voyage believed to be without precedent in naval history. The speaker was in charge of a lifeboat which got away after the sinking of a British liner by a German raider in the South Atlantic. Though many of the eighty-three people on board the lifeboat died, she reached Brazil with the survivors twenty-three days later, after covering 1,500 miles.

Dr. George F. MacLeod is one of the best-known ministers in Scotland. For a long time he was minister of the Govan Old Parish Church, in connection with which he used the Pearce Institute as the centre of social service in one of the most populous areas of Clydeside. He left Govan to become Head of the Iona Community, and used that sacred island, the cradle of Christianity in Scotland, to train ministers to work in the new housing areas where there are few church activities. At the same time a scheme to restore the ancient buildings round the Cathedral in Iona has been started.
An appeal on behalf of the Old People's Welfare Work of the National Council of Social Service by Maude Royden
At the suggestion of the Assistance Board, the National Council of Social Service has set up a Committee to extend work for the welfare of old people in wartime. While many of these still remain in bombed areas, others have been evacuated to country billets, homes, and hospitals, where they are looked after by local organisations. Many more homes are needed.
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and should be addressed to Dr. Maude Royden, [address removed].

String Quartet in D minor ('Death and the Maiden') played by the Blech String Quartet:
Harry Blech (violin)
Max Salpeter (violin)
Keith Cummings (viola)
William Pleeth (cello)
Schubert's Quartet in D minor, which is in four movements, takes its name from the slow movement, which is a very beautiful set of variations on his song 'Death and the Maiden'. Indeed, this work might easily be called 'Tragic' for, in addition to the choice of theme for the slow movement, the first movement is imbued with the spirit of resignation and sorrow. It was certainly written about the time that Schubert was going through pecuniary troubles and illness: 'I am', he said, 'the most unhappy and wretched creature in the world'.
