Sibelius's ' King Christian' Suite forms the incidental music to Adolf Paul 's tragedy of King Christian II, the sixteenth-century ruler of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, against whose treachery and tyranny Gustavus Vasa. arose. Christian was driven from his kingdom, and in spite of an attempt to regain his power, he ended his days in prison, dying in 1559.

Missionary Society
The missionary talk this afternoon is of special significance, for it is given to commemorate the hundred years of work carried out by the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society. The talk will deal generally with the Christian method of medical missions and its achievement in the missionary effort of Christendom, with illustrations of the training, hospital, and evangelical aspects of the Edinburgh Medical Mission Society work. W. J. Stuart is himself an eminent Edinburgh surgeon.

Beethoven's Piano Sonata in A flat,
Op. 110
Beethoven's Sonata in A flat, Op. 110, was composed during the years 1820-21. According to Vincent d'Indy, this work and the String Quartet in A minor, Op. 132, which was written four years later, both express the tragic mental condition of the composer during the last period of his life.
The A flat Sonata is the only work of its kind of Beethoven's last period which bears no dedication. ' Only to himself ', says Vincent d'Indy, ' could Beethoven dedicate this musical expression of a convulsion in his own life.'
Irene Scharrer first studied at the Royal Academy of Music under Tobias Matthay and made her debut as a soloist at St. James's Hall in 1901. Like many other British artists, she came to the forefront during the last war, when she was continually to be heard in London and the provinces playing with all the leading orchestras.
Once again children in Canada and the U.S.A. greet their parents in this country. Twelve families will be taking part, 'six speaking from different centres in Canada, and six from Cleveland, Ohio

Violin Sonata in A played by Arthur Catterall and R. J. Forbes
Arthur Catterall has appeared as soloist with most of the leading conductors of the day, playing practically all the concertos in the violinist's repertoire. He resigned his leadership of the BBC Symphony Orchestra some four years ago to devote his time to teaching and solo work.
R. J. Forbes , equally well known as pianist and conductor, is Principal of the Royal Manchester College of Music He has been heard many times on the air, chiefly with Henry Hoist in sonata recitals.
