Dr. George F. MacLeod is one of the best-known ministers in Scotland. For a long time he was minister of the Govan Old Parish Church, in connection with which he used the Pearce Institute as the centre of social service in one of the most populous areas of Clydeside. He left Govan to become Head of the Iona Community, and used that sacred island, the cradle of Christianity in Scotland, to train ministers to work in the new housing areas where there are few church activities. At the same time a scheme to restore the ancient buildings round the Cathedral in Iona has been started.
