3/4. Shifting Nature. China has to feed one fifth of the world's population on only seven per cent of the world's arable land. Rapid industrialisation and climate change have led to polluted air, dirty rivers and drought, so increasing thought is being given to preventing further damage. Green campaigner Huo Daishan is trying to save a river into which millions of tons of raw sewage and untreated waste water are tipped daily, but corrupt officials prefer to protect local industries rather than clamp down on polluters. The Deputy Minister of the Environment accepts that many of the 50,000 people who have developed cancer along the river's banks have done so because of pollution, but says he is powerless to shut down the offending companies.
