DOCUMENTARY OF THE WEEK
2/4. Women of the Country. Deprived of opportunities, unable to discuss their feelings and the butt of social upheaval, the women of China have suffered for centuries. But today's young women are trying to alter their position in society, battling against rising levels of prostitution and the highest female suicide rate in the world in order to make changes their grandmothers could only have dreamed of. But not everyone is happy. This emotive documentary explores the dissolution of the family unit and hears from women who have migrated to the city for work, leaving their children behind in the care of elderly relatives. And a village wedding turns nasty during an argument over the price of the bride.
