Live coverage of the second day's play from south-west London, where, weather permitting, the first round of the singles will be nearing its conclusion.
At this stage last year, defending ladies champion
Serena Williams of the USA had little trouble dispensing of Jie Zheng of China 6-3, 6-1. In the men's event, Russia's Marat Safin , seeded 19, consolidated his mediocre record at the All England Club as he lost 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 6-7 to tournament newcomer and fellow Russian Dmitry Tursunov.
Meanwhile British number one Tim Henman began his first match in tentative fashion, losing the opening set 4-6 to Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo. After snatching the second set on a tie-break, the British number five seed took control of the next two, bagging a four-set victory and a clash with Switzerland's Ivo Heuberger in the second round.
Introduced by Sue Barker. Commentary by, among others, Chris Bradnam , Peter Fleming , Jason Goodall , Phil Jones , Louise Pleming , Simon Reed ,
Garry Richardson , Liz Smylie and Keith Wilson. BBCi: satellite and cable viewers can select action from up to five extra courts, plus a range of other features, by pressing the red button on their handset.
