At this stage last year, former champion Goran Ivanisevic entered the contest unseeded, but quickly demonstrated his form by dispatching the second seed to fall on the first day, Mikhail Youzhny, in straight sets. Another seeded victim was Germany's Nicolas Kiefer who, after taking the first two sets 6-4, 6-4, succumbed to unseeded Swede Thomas Johansson who won the next three sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-0. In the women's championship, Venus Williams smashed her way into the second round in straight sets against Marie-Gayanay Mikaelian, and fellow American Lindsay Davenport displayed a similar show of strength by defeating Dally Randriantefy 6-2, 6-1.
